This page is dedicated to the basic usage of the ggmap library. This library makes it easy to retrieve raster map tiles from popular online mapping services like Google Maps, OpenStreetMap or Stamen Maps, and plot them using the ggplot2 framework. It produces static maps. In this page I describe the basic utilisation: the goal is just to make a background map. See other section for adding data on it, like bubble maps or chloropleth maps.

 

1 – Calling google background


The get_googlemap function allows to retrieve google map background. Four backgrounds exist: terrain, satellite, roadmap and hybrid.

 

 

2- Calling stamen background


Using the same style you can call stamen background using the get_stamenmap function. The most famous background is the ‘watercolor’ one. But several other possibilities exist as shown in the second figure:
